5 Ways to Be Stylish and Sustainable

Here’s how you can make

better fashion choices

Sustainability has always been a relevant topic of discussion in the consumer goods market. One of the industries that needs greener initiatives is definitely the fashion industry. While we can see many fashion brands making better decisions in business, what can we do as consumers to amplify this sustainable movement in the fashion world? Here are some tips to help you be fashionable while prioritizing sustainability:

1. Prioritize quality over quantity

Invest in high-quality pieces designed to last. Look for well-crafted designs with good craftsmanship and made with durable fabrics. Quality items tend to have a longer lifespan, reducing the need for constant replacements. For example, linen and silk are great natural fibers that are least prone to pilling compared to polyester and nylon!

In addition to that, “quiet luxury” has been the talk of the town when it comes to fashion styles. Choosing quality over quantity will surely elevate your whole style effortlessly!

2. Embrace timeless and versatile pieces

We have all heard the saying, “Trends come and go, but classics are here to stay!” Choose designs that have a timeless appeal and can be easily mixed and matched with other pieces in your wardrobe. That is why we often see the “capsule wardrobe” trend, which features basic silhouettes and neutral colors with a pop of color of your choice!

Minimalist and “old money” styles have been super popular recently, so it could be fun to mix and match different outfits with less purchasing!

3. Support ethical and sustainable brands

Making better purchasing decisions can be a great way to hold fashion companies accountable when it comes to sustainability. If you can, do support fashion brands that have sustainable and ethical practices. Look for certifications such as Fair Trade, Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), or Bluesign®, all of which recognize responsible, traceable, and sustainably committed production processes.

Educate yourself on the topic and research the brand's transparency, including its policies on fair labor practices and overall environmental footprint. These organizations offer a searchable database of qualified suppliers for your region, making it simple and super effective!

4. Explore secondhand and vintage options.

One of my personal favorite pastimes! What is better than the adrenaline of discovering previously loved pieces at a great price? Reducing waste! Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online vintage stores are great options for finding unique pre-loved clothing. Buying secondhand reduces the demand for new production and gives garments a new lease on life, minimizing garment waste.

It's also an opportunity to discover one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect your personal style. Also, vintage and retro styles are always on trend and loved by the fashion world! If you were not a thrifter before, this is your sign to start now!

5. Rent or borrow clothing.

Imagine having that expensive designer dress but not needing to spend on the premium and taking up precious space in your closet—the share economy of fashion? Count me in!

Dress rental is one of the most talked-about topics, especially during this time of year with all the parties, weddings, and get-togethers. Renting allows you to enjoy different styles without the burden accompanying ownership; it is a great way of reducing your personal fashion waste while still being on top of your style game!
