Midnight Runners Toronto: What Is The Hype About?

So Apparently, Everyone Starts Running at 30… So, I Did Too

There comes a time in your late 20s when all your friends suddenly start running. Like, actually running, with shoes that are so specific and specialized and hydration packs and all the gadgets. I turned 28 recently, and I guess I felt the pressure. So, I finally gave in and decided to give it a try.

I quickly found the Midnight Runners, which apparently is one of the most famous running clubs in the world. So, if you’re also thinking about giving it a try, let me tell you about my experience; maybe it’ll help you decide if it’s your thing.

Now, if you’ve never heard of them, Midnight Runners is an international running crew with communities all around the world. People come together in cities like Berlin, London, New York, and yes, Toronto to run together and maybe even meet new people.

Here in Toronto, you can find them on social media or through an app called Heylo App, which is how I signed up. Once you create your profile, you can join the Toronto Midnight Runners and RSVP for one of their weekly runs, totally free. The instructions and meeting points are all listed in the chat. And so, on a Tuesday evening at 7 p.m., I found myself walking to the Stack Market, where I saw that over 100 people were already gathered. There were about six instructors, all carrying speakers, keeping the energy high and vibes strong.

The Actual Run

I’m very new to running, so I was a bit nervous. But once I got there, everything was very easy to follow. The instructors guided the group and kept the vibe electric. Before starting, they gave some safety instructions, and something unexpected happened. One of the instructors took the mic and said, “Alright, before we start, I want you to turn to someone you don’t know and talk to them for two minutes.” It turns out this isn’t just a workout, it’s also a way to socialize. Which makes sense, because you have probably heard that running clubs are the new Tinder. So whether you’re looking for new friends, professional connections, or even a date, this is also the place to be.

And then we started running.

What I didn’t expect, and what no one told me, was that it’s not just running. The route includes three stops for bodyweight exercises like push-ups and squats. So yes, cardio and strength. The group runs together, the instructors run in front, middle, and back, so no one gets left behind. You can go at your own pace, but they definitely motivate you to keep going.

By the end, I was sweaty, sore, and honestly, pretty proud of myself. I was able to finish the workout and I’m looking forward to the next Tuesday run!

The Conclusion

If you’re new to running or just looking for a fun way to get active, without paying for a gym membership, I highly recommend checking out Midnight Runners. Even if you’re not a runner (yet), it might just change your mind.

And who knows, maybe 30 is the year we all go into a healthy lifestyle. Or at least pretend to, on Tuesdays.
