Combating Winter: Five Do’s and Don'ts

Cold Comfort: A Tale of Conquering Winter’s Challenges as a Newcomer

Winter has a knack for putting a damper on one’s mood, especially when it’s your first time. As a newcomer from a region where a chilly day is 13.9oC. I found myself struggling with the unfamiliar cold. No one else needs to suffer though, which is why I’m sharing my five dos and don’ts to win in the winter as a newcomer to Canada.

Vitamin Power-up: During winter, when outdoor activities are scarce, and sunlight is a rare commodity, your body craves a boost.

Do: Load up on essential vitamins, particularly vitamin C and D to strengthen your body against winter’s challenges. For instance, not getting much sunlight and facing cold weather can raise the risk of seasonal illnesses like flu and the common cold impacting your immune system. Having sufficient amounts of these vitamins makes your immune system stronger, and helps to ward off illness.

Don’t: Brush off the value of these vitamins; they will be your allies during the long winter months.

Positive vibes and Social Bonds: Your mindset and the connections you foster are pivotal during the winter journey.

Do: Brew warm drinks, entertain happy thoughts about the weather, and harness positive energy. Get out and start connecting with good people. Embrace fresh opportunities. This is a game changer for mental health.

Don’t: Let your mind succumb to negativity, and avoid isolation. Isolation can cast a shadow on both physical and emotional well-being.

Warm up in Comfortable and Affordable Wears: Winter wardrobe hunting can be both daunting and pricey.

Do: Invest wisely in quality thermal wear, gloves, hat, scarf, winter boots and a jacket that won’t break the bank.

Don’t: Squeeze into overly tight boots and jackets; opt for comfort to ensure easy movement during winter.

Cozy inside and out: Create a warm and inviting space for yourself.

Do: Dress warmly with a cozy scarf and make your living space inviting, creating a positive anticipation each time you step outside.

Don’t: Avoid a too-cold basement. If you can’t, keep it warm and comfortable with space heaters, blankets, and sweaters.

Gratitude: Cultivating a habit of gratitude can significantly influence one’s perspective.

Do: Weave thankful habits into your daily routine. Express gratitude for the little things in your life and the surroundings. It‘s a mind booster.

Don’t: Underestimate the ripple effect of gratitude. It helps maintain a focused and positive mindset.

These simple guides are my strategies for conquering the challenges and thriving through the chill as a newcomer.
