Men’s Grooming Guide for Valentine’s Day

By Ashish Singla

The Valentine’s Day is almost here and most of us would love to make this day a

special and unforgettable one. It requires a lot of confidence to ask someone out

and if you are those lucky ones who have found their dates then I should

congratulate you first. It’s said that first impression is the last one and I totally

agree to it. But, to create a good impression you need to look good too.

So, here are some of the tips on how to groom for Valentine’s Day:

1_SHOWER.jpg

1. Use shampoo and conditioner while taking a shower

You don’t want your date to see dandruff on your hair. While taking a shower put adequate amount of shampoo and conditioner on your hair to make your hair soft and shiny. Some of the most recommended brands are L’oreal, Garnier, Head & Shoulders, Dove etc.

2. Clear up the clogged pores and remove dirt from your face

After going out and working for long hours, your skin gets filled with dirt which leads to an increase of dead skin cells. To remove the dirt and heal your skin cells, wash your face with a gentle exfoliating face wash or apply a face mask to let your skin breathe and brighten the complexion. Some of the most recommended brands are Neutrogena, Kiehl’s, Cetaphil etc.

3. Apply and Carry a Lip Balm

It’s the winter season going on and your lips gets dry and chapped. Your crush might feel hesitant to kiss you in such situation. To avoid this situation, apply a lip balm before you go out and always carry one in your pocket too. Some of the most recommended brands are Nivea, Burt’s Bees, Blistex etc.

4_TOOTHBRUSH.jpg

4. Brush and Floss your teeth

Having a bad breath when you go out with your date is one of the worst things that can spoil your night. Make sure you brush and floss your teeth well and rinse your mouth with a mouthwash. If you smoke, then you also need to carry a gum with you after brushing and flossing. Some of the most recommended brands for dental care are Colgate, Oral-B, Sensodyne, Listerine, Crest etc.

5_MOISTURIZER.jpg

5. Apply a moisturizer on your body and face

Protect your skin from getting dry in the winter by applying a good moisturizer on your body and face so that you don’t have to worry about your skin before going out to meet your date. I’ll prefer a moisturizer which is made for all-skin types. Some of the most recommended brands are Nivea, Jack Black, Neutrogena, Dove, Kiehl’s etc.

6_COLOGNE.jpg

6. Make sure your armpits smell good

Sweat can make your armpits smell really bad and you don’t want your date to maintain a distance from you while you sit and walk together. To avoid this situation, apply an anti-perspirant spray/roll-on to keep your armpits smell good so that you don’t lose your confidence. Some of the most recommended brands are Old Spice, Axe, Nivea, Degree etc.

7_SHAVE.jpg

7. Trim your facial hair

If you have a long and uneven beard/moustache, then you might need to trim it out and provide it a good shape so that your face doesn’t look messy and dirty. You don’t want your date to feel your itchy facial hair while she kisses you. Some of the most recommended brands are Philips, Gillette etc.

5 Essential Winter Makeup Trends to TRY

Well, we all know that following a makeup guideline is mandatory in the winter season. Since the cold and dry wind instantly steals moisture from your skin, triggering multiple skin problems. Therefore, the ultimate solution is to stick with a hydrated and defined look this season. Gone are the days when your winter makeup was restrained between ruby red lipstick and smoky eyes.

Here are some state-of-the-art makeup ideas to try this season.

Skin Care Tips for your first Canadian Winter

Jonquil Jardine

Canada’s winter can be harsh on your skin. The weather will change the appearance of your skin from smooth to dry and irritated. Anything with moisture will become your best friend. For instance, choose soaps with a lot of moisture such as Dove and steer away from products that contain high levels of fragrance/perfume and alcohol (Which can strip away natural oils).

Additional tips include:

•    Avoid long, hot showers (I know it’s tempting especially during the Winter). Hot showers tend to wash away the natural oils in your skin.

•    Apply moisturizer after you come out the shower - this is the best time for your skin to absorb the moisture.

•    Apply moisturizer at night especially on areas such as your feet. Wearing socks after applying moisturizer will seal in the moisture until the morning.

•    Use light, irritant-free products especially if you have sensitive skin.

•    Lastly, keep hydrated. Eat foods that are high in water such as cucumbers and watermelon as well as drink water throughout the day.

Products that will protect your skin include:

•    Natural oils such as, argan, coconut or almond oil which can be found at various health stores in Toronto including, Healthy Planet. Price range: ($7-$15 depending on oil and size of bottle). These oils can be used on your face, body and even lips. Tip: Do a patch test to make sure you are not allergic to any of the oils.

•    Vitamin E Intense Moisture line from The Body Shop. Includes, gentle facial and body wash, lotion, eye cream, night cream all starting at $6.00.

•    Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream for sensitive skin. Price range: $10+.

Everyone’s skin is different. Therefore it’s essential to find the product that works for you. Protect your skin from the harsh, winter conditions by moisturizing your skin on a daily basis. Glowing skin is always in.

ICE as PRIMER? And more? Wait, What?

By Jerreline

@jerrelinee

I don’t want to state what has already been mentioned so many times. But oh well, it gets me so tempted that I HAVE to. Yes, you can use ice as a primer!

Ice has been a part of our skincare regime since ages. And it not only helps as a primer, but it works to soothe your skin and can easily become a part of your everyday skincare treatment.

PRIMING OUR SKIN WITH ICE BEFORE MAKEUP

Yes, it’s true. You can use ice to prime your skin. Using it before applying any makeup can increase the longevity of it on our skin. It’s also a great way to chill, like literally! Makeup artist Ashley Blue DeFrancesco used an ice cube as a foundation applicator and also as a primer. Check out these links to know what other’s have to say about this trend!

REDUCING PUFFINESS

I remember waking up one day with bloated face. Yes, your girl had a cheat day the very day before. But, I found a solution! I rubbed ice all over my face for 3 minutes, and voila! Also, Celebrity makeup artist Lisa Eldridge swears by ice facials. She uses it on her models to reduce jet lag and tired looking skin.

TIRED LOOKING EYES? No problem!

Ever wake up feeling like eyes are super restless, and just tired? Put some ice on it!

It’s super simple! You can also make your DIY (Do it yourself) ice cube remedies using ingredients of your choice. From strawberries to lemon, or even cucumber! Different ingredients can be used for different purposes. Cucumber helps to cool down the skin and reduce inflammation, while the vitamin C in lemon can help acne scars! Honey also helps to moisturize our skin.

BREAKOUTS

Frozen ice cubes with antioxidant packed green tea, or milk can help minimize our pores and soothe inflammation! Ice can also be used as treatments for breakouts.

 Tips To Consider

  • Remember, not to over do it. Spend not more than 5 minutes while doing an ice massage. We don’t want red, irritated skin right?

  • Don’t apply the ice near your eye region if you’re using other ingredients as well, to avoid it from getting into your eye.

  • Don’t rub your skin too vigorously.

So, what are you waiting for? Try it yourself!

NOT SO EASY WAYS TO KEEP YOUR SKIN HEALTHY

By Jerreline

@jerrelinee

Most of the articles out there will tell you how to take care of your skin, keep it healthy, glowing and gorgeous looking everyday! But we all know the real deal, no matter how hard we try we always end up looking at the mirror, disappointed. And well ofcourse , not satisfied. We spend money on different products, different brands and yet we just can’t seem to get enough.

Let’s be real, our skin can be really hard to manage. Especially, when we have zero time to chill and when we are always worried about it. Let’s talk about some ways you can ‘try’ and achieve rather ‘okay’ skin.

photo-1535450246895-e8df524fc6bb.jpg

  • Be realistic - Alot of people are already telling us not to trust the magazine images, which is fine, but we all have seen people in real life with gorgeous skin. The harsh truth is that most of it depends on our genetics. Our genes play an important role when it comes to our skin. Period.

  • Keep work at work/Keep school at school - Sure, we can get extra credits for being hard working, but let’s ‘try’ not to overexert ourselves, again causing stress and WRINKLES. Stress also releases cortisol which affects our hormones and causes acne. And nobody likes to break out, right?

  • Understanding consumer (YOU) satisfaction - As a consumer, you like to try new products. You can’t seem to get enough of different things once they hit the market, why is that? Law of marginal utility, in simple words, when you consume more of a certain product, your satisfaction slowly decreases. Therefore, you jump to a different product. It’s good to have your skin exposed to ingredients you think will work for you, but sometimes it can go the opposite way and cause more harm than good. Stick to what works best for you.

  • Do you - They tell you to try coconut oil for dry skin? Or cucumber to cool your skin? Right, but do what you want, what feels right on your skin. Don’t let your skin be irritated by ingredients that clearly do not work for you.

  • Be satisfied with how far you have gone – Are you going through treatments? Or just doing your own home-made remedies? Well, good for you! Be proud of how much you have achieved with your skin.

  • And last but not the least, be confident and stay confident - Sure we can break out from time to time and get wrinkles or fine lines, but that’s only human. You could use make up to cover it up. You could always go under the knife too. But really, just sit back for a minute and ask yourself, ‘Is this what beauty means to me?’

Skin care essentials

By: Jonquil Jardine

I like to keep my skin routine simple. I tend to use less than five products on my face and body which includes a facial wash, face moisturizer, eye cream, makeup wipes and body lotion. I’ve personally been using these products for years. These are my go to products on a daily basis.

What do I use:

Aveeno positively radiant facial wash ($15 or less from Shoppers)

Clinique face lotion (under $40 from Clinique)

Simple cleansing wipes ($15 from Walmart/Shoppers Drug Mart)

Clinique intense moisturizer (used under my eyes) (under $30 from Clinique)

Elm Spa body lotion ($50 at Elm Spa)

I strongly dislike strong scents especially in skin care products. The products mentioned have little to no scent and can be used for sensitive skin.

As I age, I find myself searching for skin care products opposed to new makeup products. For those of you that like to use simple products, alternatives include almond oil for your face and coconut oil for your body.

Why is it important to take care of your skin

Skin is your body’s biggest organ. It helps regulate body temperature and acts as a filter. Do yourself a favour and find a skin care routine that fits for you.

The Benefits of Tea Tree Oil

By: Jonquil Jardine

Want to get rid of acne without using harsh ingredients?

I tend to break out ever so often and while I would prefer my breakouts to disappear on its own, we know that’s not going to happen. My go to product is tea tree oil which has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

How to apply

Simply add tea tree oil on a cotton ball and apply on skin (which I personally do) or if you have extremely sensitive skin, mix the oil with some water. Tea tree oil has a cooling sensation when applied to your skin.

Results

I honestly see results within one day. I tend to apply the oil at night (due to its strong scent) and when I wake up, my pimple is gone.

Price Tag

The holista brand can be found at health food stores or Costco for around $15. The bottle is a good size and will last you at least one year. Another alternative are products that contain tea tree oil along with other ingredients such as the tea tree oil collection at The Body Shop. The Body Shop has an entire line devoted to tea tree oil. I personally never tried it and I honestly prefer to use products that contain less ingredients.

Alternative ways to be used:

-hand sanitizer

-insect repellent

-antiseptic for wounds

-control dandruff (this works! I’ve tried multiple brands to fight dry scalp but this is by far the best)

*Like any new product, try a patch before fully using oil

Spot Light: Sensational Gelvolution Review

Hey Guys!

I’m not a huge fan of fake nails due to its practicality. I feel like everything seems like  challenge once you add an inch to your nails. That being said, I rocked the long length for about a day until I couldn’t take it anymore. As soon as I got home I filed my nails to a length that allowed me to text freely.

These nails are beautiful. Sensational Gelvolution offers a variety of shapes, colours and designs for every person and occasion. On top of that, I was able to snatch these bad boys on sale. I paid around $12CAD instead of $15CAD which isn’t too bad considering how expensive gel/acrylic nails cost at the nail salon.

Will I repurchase? YAS! I actually love these nails. I’m quite a simple gal but these nails bring out my inner CARDI. I feel like I want to touch things in front of people so they notice.

Ps. Please note the nails are a nice length if you are accustomed to fake nails, I just decided to file mine so that I could function on a day-to-day basis.

How To Turn Your Daily Shower into a Mini-Spa Moment

Melissa Perdigao

For many of us, showering is just another part of our daily routine. Pampering ourselves on a daily basis can seem like a distant fantasy. Adding a few tweaks to your routine can help you achieve that glowing, new-me feeling that an afternoon at the spa delivers! Start your day off on a luxurious note by trying out these simple steps:

  • Start with a dry brush.

Right off the bat, starting your shower routine with a dry brush helps to increase circulation in the body and get the blood flowing. Dry brushing provides exfoliation, removing the initial layer of dead skin cells to reveal more glowing skin. Use your dry brush before heading into the shower in upward motions towards the heart to stimulate your skin.

  • Double scrub is your best friend

Use a bar soap to get the initial layer of grime off of your skin. Look for something with a mild grain to it if you crave additional exfoliation. Incorporating a bar soap in addition to a liquid or cream product also adds to the sensory experience of your shower- layering complimentary scents will leave a trail of fragrance that will stay with you throughout the day.

  • Start moisturizing before you dry off

Add an extra layer of moisture by using an in-shower lotion or cream. It feels ultra lavish and the warmth of your shower will maximize absorption. Choose something that smells heavenly to you and really work the product into your skin. You’ll step out of the shower with the softest skin you can achieve!

  • Ditch the ratty towels, invest in something fluffy!

We as humans are creatures of habit and comfort and can grow attached to things like our favorite towels. But switching out that 5 year old towel for a plush, new one, can feel luxurious in ways we often forget! Choose something that is thicker and heavier which will be highly absorbent, and take care not to use harsh detergents to preserve quality.

  • Final touches

Don’t be afraid to slather on the body butter. Building layers of moisture throughout your shower and after drying off will increase longevity and help you achieve glowing, supple skin. Brush your pearly whites, apply your daily SPF and pour yourself a tall glass of water- you’re fresh, rejuvenated and ready to take on the day!

The Perfect DIY Mask for Glowing Skin

My skin is my precious possession. I love treating it with all the beneficial vitamins, natural masks, and butter’s to give it that much-needed hydration it deserves. I must admit, before I got into natural skin care I was obsessed with the latest products out there that promised all kinds of magical results. My skin is very sensitive so using face products from Neutrogena, Noxzema, Nivea, even Aveeno would either dry out or irritate my skin.

Guilty of being a product junkie, I one day told myself “enough is enough!” And began researching natural skincare. That lead me to research home ingredients for the skin, that dealt with specific areas problematic to my skin. The power of Google and YouTube, made me fall in love with the idea of making my own skin care products beneficial to the needs of my skin. I’m going to share with you my all time favorite mask, this mask is so effective and beneficial to targeting hyperpigmentation and dark circles under the eyes. This is what I like to call the “Liquid Sun Mask” which contains:

1. Turmeric

What’s amazing about this mask is that it contains turmeric, a spice traditionally used in India for cooking and medicinal purposes. Curcumin is the active ingredient in turmeric that’s powerful in anti-inflammatory properties and very strong in antioxidants. This is important because turmeric can benefit your skin as a home remedy for combating acne, eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, wrinkles, and dark circles under the eyes. It’s also beneficial for reducing skin inflammation from its high antioxidants, it slows down cell damage and evens skin tone from hyperpigmentation.

2. Honey

Okay, honey! Let’s talk about the honey! A magical ingredient that works wonders on its own, it’s the skin whisperer, the soulmate your skin has been waiting for! The Abracadabra in a jar… okay, I’ll stop. I’m excited because this is another element that makes this mask so special. It’s super hydrating (perfect for winter/fall) soothing (perfect for sensitive skin) rich in enzymes which is great for slowing down the aging clock and antibacterial (perfect for acne). Also, keep in mind that the most potent honey out there is Manuka Honey.

3. Plain Yogurt

The lactic acid in yogurt aids in dissolving dead skin cells exfoliates skin and helps to decrease wrinkles. The zinc takes care of acne and the yogurt itself is smooth and gentle enough that it won’t dry out your skin, which is heaven for me!

4. Lemon

The final ingredient is Lemon, now this is optional. You can use lemon to add an extra brightening element to this mask. It’s great in vitamin c, improves the quality of skin and tones flawlessly. Not only is lemon good for your skin, it supports weight loss. Beginning your day with a hot cup of lemon water will cleanse and freshen your body towards a great start.

The “Liquid Sun Mask” is an excellent exfoliating agent and quite easy to make with just a few ingredients from home or inexpensive items from the grocery store. All you need is 30 minutes out of your day. It’ll take no more than 3 minutes to assemble it, and the remainder of the time is for the mask to do its thing! Once it begins to tighten your whole face, wash it away. Your skin may appear a bit yellow after you wash it off, no worries! Just remove the rest of it with a washcloth for your face. If you have any leftover, you can put the remainder of the mask in the fridge for about 2 days before you’ll need to make a fresh batch.

Keep in mind that everyone’s skin is different. So, I recommend that you test a small area before applying to your face. Be careful not to get this mask on your clothing as well, since turmeric is a dying agent, it’ll stain your clothes, I’ve learned that the hard way.

And there you have it!  With consistency, this mask will give you the glowing skin you’ll appreciate, especially during the summer!

Happy YOU Time.

😊
